Cesare;

Next/Openstep OS originally ran on Intel hardware. Much of the work converting it has been to optimize it for the PowerPC platform.

At one point there was speculation that Rhapsody was going to run on multiple platforms, but Jobs opted to reaffirm AAPL's indentity (and revenue stream) as a hardware maker.

Still, even last week, rumors circulated that AAPL and INTC were preping to release a version of OSX that would run on the Merced. *Technically* there's no reason they can't easily do it.

>You really think they'll put much effort into making QT4 stream well from a Solaris machine? or NT?<

>Reuters: Apple said that at the show, three computer companies, International Business Machines Corp., Silicon Graphics Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc., are demonstrating server versions of QuickTime, running on their hardware, in Apple's booth.

''They can come in and make a (version of) server (software) for any platform they want,'' said Phil Schiller, vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple.<

As far as I can tell, "streaming" vs. "non-streaming" is essentially dependent on available bandwidth. Does G2 beat QT4 on image quality? I'm still salivating over the quality of QT4 Star Wars download. Now I'm just waiting for the ADSL and video on demand.

>I don't see anything in Apple's announcements that are particularly earth-shaking or that have the potential to rearrange the competitive landscape vis-a-vis RNWK.<

You're missing the forest for the trees my friend.

For $4K, you can buy a G3/monitor/Firewire video camera/Final Cut and create a *broadcast quality* video series entitles "Cesare Speaks".

For another $1K, you can buy OSX Server to broadcast/market the series from the same CPU.

That's it, no license fees to RNWK, etc.

Think that's not going to change the landscape?

PS> You seem the only one on this thread interested in discussing the RNWK's technology and corporate strategy rather than it's ebullient stock price.
