[e.spire Transfers Off-Net Customers in BellSouth Territory to Access One Communications] Company Continues Strategy to Phase-Out Local Switched Resale ANNAPOLIS JUNCTION, Md., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- e.spire Communications, Inc., today announced that it has assigned its interests in approximately 3,700 off-net customers in BellSouth markets to Access One Communications, a Florida-based competitive local exchange carrier. It is estimated that approximately 15,000 lines will be transferred. In December 1998, the Company announced plans to eliminate switched local resale from its product portfolio and focus its sales efforts toward facilities-based on-net voice and data traffic. "This action furthers management initiatives to enhance profitability through the conversion or sale of these low margin access lines," said Anthony J. Pompliano, Chairman and CEO of e.spire. Clearly, this agreement immediately improves the gross margins of our core telecom business."
