NITE ... from briefing.com ...

KNIGHT/TRIMARK GROUP INC. (NITE) 102 3/8 +15 3/8. It is easy to see why this securities broker for the Nasdaq and over-the-counter markets is having such a positive day. The company reported Q1 earnings of $0.67 a share, which were significantly ahead of the First Call estimate of $0.39 a share, and topped year ago profits by 235%. At the same time, revenues for the period surged close to 188% to $182.7 million and 53% on a sequential basis. To be sure, the company's impressive financial numbers greatly reflect the increase trading that it is being conducted through online brokers. As online trading increased during the latest period, the company gained market share through the number of trades it handled in the quarter. And signs are that online trading will only increase in the future, positioning Knight/Trimark to continue to benefit from the new American pastime. Processing trades is nothing new for Knight/Trimark. What is new is the significant surge in volume which the company has been able to handle without much of a hitch. According to the company, it processed on average 306,000 trades per day in Q1, more than double the volume processed in the year-ago period, and 42% more than in the prior quarter. Hence, the company has been able to ride the trading wave which is significantly padding its bottom line. While the stock is up more than 325% since the beginning of the year, it seems that the meteoritic stock rise is well deserved as long as the company can continue to grow its bottom line.
