There is more than money at stake here, there is a tremendous amount of name recognition with the IBM label on the desktop. This has been a very competitive challenge for IBM.

And, as a former IBMer, they would loose more money if they stopped selling PCs. How? you ask, well it's important to understand that each unit at IBM is operated seperatly from each other and treat each other as business partners in a sense. So...many of the processors, hard drives, memory, and other semiconductors that are manufactured by IBM's other units are sold to the PC Company for IBM PCs at retail prices. So, if IBM stops selling PCs, then their storage systems division, semiconductor unit, Processor unit would loose a very large customer. Hence the rest of the company would suffer and they would loose that desktop. And none of us want to see that!!
