I think you are extremely mistaken here. Intel paid millions to S3 in order to license the IP that they bought out from Exponential because their new Merced chip infringed on it. Can you guess why S3 bought patents that had nothing to do with their current ASIC design? High tech companies spend millions and millions of dollars acquiring patents from other companies and licensing them. You need to do a bit more research into this. Patents are extremely valuable and entire companies are bought out strictly for their intellectual property.
