REPORT from Oklahoma City:
I was changing my ISPs around today due to some mail problems with one of them and ended up with this local outfit. Looks like I have x2 RIGHT NOW without being on AOL: ionet.net
"ioNET is currently doing X2 beta testing. If you live in Oklahoma City and have a modem with the X2 firmware, you can participate in our field tests. Please use the following access number:"
ionet.net
Here are some snips from the e-mails that were "pre-loaded" to my new account:
"x2 56k tests are going well, seeing connects up to 50.6k so far. We hope to be able to provide all the upgrade services our customers will need to use this service, saving you the pain of dealing directly with USR (bless their hearts). We will be support 56k in Phoenix at no additional charge and will have those lines up in the next day or so."
"The new circuits in Phoenix have been installed and there should no longer be a busy signal problem there. If you have any further problems, please call or email support. The site now has x2 56k support capability as soon as the customer modems are released. We still have several more upgrades in the works for Phoenix to further improve service."
"Short message for OKC customers. We are upgrading the code on our dialup systems on the 415-6000 in an effort to resolve some problems and to prepare for the imminent deployment of x2 56k. The code change will happen tonight, Thursday, Feb 27, at 9pmcst. You may have experienced some disruption in service during the 2 hours prior to this time due to the upgrades.
For those technical types, the chassis have a PRI ISDN interface, 12 quad modem cards, a terminal server card, and a network management card, all of which have their own software. Rather than deal with past versions of code, we're going to jump directly to the most current version of code on all cards except the x2 terminal server card and modem code . If this works okay, we will propogate the upgrade system wide in preparation of deploying the x2 terminal server and modem code shortly."
Looks like if you are in one of the major cities of OK, AZ, MO or AR you might have a local choice for $18.95/month unlimited. |
