Tom - interesting that QCOM has added SiGe for their next-generation chipset:

qualcomm.com

DSP chipset, doesn't include the power amplifier. Silicon germanium is used for the low noise amplifier in the RFR3100 Receive Processor. IBM's CommQuest subsidiary offers an integrated GSM cellular chipset that likewise uses SiGe for a low noise amplifier.

However, Atmel's TEMIC subsidiary introduced a SiGe power amplifier last month, indicating that it can be done competitively. I wonder if QCOM intends to eventually integrate that function into their own design, as they move towards a single-chip phone?   --Will
