Right.no active programs but disk cache is still enabled.

I have not graduated to NT yet. It is installed on one of my drives but I still boot Win95. It is not quite as picky as NT. I think disc cache is an NT thing..although the drives also come with some kind of cache. Is disc cache active if you are not doing anything? My Win95 machine seems to periodically search all the drives..I hear it and am not to sure what it is..virus? worm? normal?

And now the monitor is bad too?

My first monitor..a 13 inch NEC. The only component left from my first machine..must be ten years old. If only the other components had a 10 year useful life.

What a string of bad luck your having.

Not really..or nothing out of the ordinary. I am used to living with error messages and the like. It seems like par for the course. It is getting better with time..as the used component stock grows it is easier to troubleshoot. It took about two hours to swap out the mobo and get the AOPEN machine up and running. I call that good luck. I would have spent that much time fighting traffic and waiting in those awful Fry's lines...and they have a poor selection of mobos..no ABIT..no AOPEN..no..no..no..no..no..no.....

With so much going wrong its hard to be methodical to tract back problems. You could always swallow your pride and take the box into a shop.

Not a chance. A couple of minor nuisances do not bother me. As soon as one problem is solved another pops up..so why ask for trouble?<g> With all the boot options I can usually find something that works. Things are much better than they were last year when I was involved with proprietary headaches..still have some at work...the big guys are relentless.

Methodical? If I do the same thing twice and get different results..where is the logic? These machines have a mind of their own. It seems to be as much an art as it is a science.

I did get professional help for my car..well I had to pass the CA smog test. Against my better judgement I let them do a lot of things..$750 worth..and it does not run any better. Gas mileage went from 23.5 long term average to 22.7..(350 V8) after they tuned it up..sure what's to tune up?..and cleaned the injectors. They talked me into changing the differential fluid..I think that was the mistake. Actually I think 90 percent of the bill was a mistake. I had Mobil synthetic and they probably replaced it with something else with more friction. I generally have better luck when I fiddle with things myself.

Just got some dual xeon 1 gig RAM machines..first class video card machines at work...mid towers!! NO room for drives!! Three external 5 1/4 bays. They provided a parallel port CDR because they said NO more room!! How do I put in removable harddrives? I have six externals on my home brew and it is not enough.
