Amazon.com (AMZN: news, msgs) is preparing to announce it will begin selling supermarket store items online. The company has made a large minority investment in Bellevue, Wash.-based HomeGrocer Inc., the Mercury News reported. The paper said the e-tailer's move into groceries, along with its existing books, music and videos sales venture, and its controlling stake in Drugstore.com, are part of an Internet power bloc put together by Silicon Valley venture capitalists Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers. Word of the HomeGrocer.com investment could be released at the same time Amazon.com reports first-quarter earnings April 28.
