Maffei had just gotten promoted to Senior........
He had been in the CFO job for only a couple of years. I think it could be a plus for MSFT to lose him----stronger ties to Roadrunner and stronger ties to the ISP biz itself. What they would lose is just someone who gets to play around with numbers and really has nothing to do with sales or marketing. He is probably tired of the number crunching game and wants to run the whole show at another company. Can't blame him for that.
He must have made enough money from MSFT that now might be the time to be in a position to make real decisions---maybe make billions in the process.

If Maffei actually leaves, I think MSFT will promote from within.
Just a hunch.
