Short sale increase is a result of merger arbitrage. The play to capture the differnce in price between Ascend and Lucent is to buy ascend and short lucent. Then when the stock is converted cover the short with the lucent you get from your asecnd shares. This locks in the approximately $4 share differential that currently exists.
