God only knows how IRID will come out especially over the short term. But the company with the most valuable real estate up there (more close satellites) has to be worth a lot of money. There certainly is broadband mania going on in the mkt. now with all the fiber optic companies. Satellites, I guess, can be engineered or have software to project that broadband anywhere on the globe without digging up a bunch of right of ways or stinging cable across the bottom of the ocean. I got direct TV today to watch CNBC from my office. The local cable co. wanted $500 to bring in the wire, and the local Bell subsidiary (with one tower downtown for wireless TV) has a 4 story building in between the tower and my office. I rest my case. And I infer from the ads that cell phone modems can access the WWW at 56 K now. I plan to get a 3COM card and connect my laptop to my cell phone as soon as I can afford it. So the nascent technology is already competitive.
