(CONT)&(EDITED): it connected at 46.666K, would send frames but wouldn't receive any. Next I'll check out the software update site they say to visit first for a download to see if that corrects the problem and improves the connect speed.

Well, it's not that:

"Currently, there are no updates to your modem's x2 software. Please check here often to make sure you always have the latest version."

Next I'll look through the CD-ROM that came with it.
