JXM,
PLease take minute to read the following and then review your position with the fast pace of Internet Telephony. I have received this directly from Crys-tel telecommunications and have copied the substance of their report to me.
Internet telephony and IP telephony is the same meaning and is used interchangably. For example, there is a magazine out called Internet Telephony and all it talks about is IP telephony. The main reason why Internet Telephony is still used today is because IP Telephony started by using the Internet and the Internet is still the largest IP network in the world. Almost all networks deployed today is still using part of their network if not all their network over the Internet. For example, VIP Calling, Delta Three, and TeleMatrix - the three of the four largest ITSP (Internet telephony service providers - notice that all service providers are still referred to as "Internet Telephony Service Providers" still have majority if not all their network going through the public internet. Also, the largest IP show in the world is called VON by the way - Voice on the NET.
As to what Crys-Tel is deploying, is a combo of public internet and private intranets. Countries which doesn't have the required bandwidth hence QoS - quality of service, Crys-Tel will be deploying a private IP network just like between Italy and North America but in Canada and the USA where the are lots of bandwidth and the latency between any two points is below 100ms the QoS will be identical and sometimes even better than the PSTN. For any voice calls to be close to the PSTN the latency must be under 200ms and if any real time fax is to be sent over an IP network, the latency must be under 350ms.
Almost all gateways in the world can do compression and Vienna (Nokia) is no exception. Nokia doesn't manuafacture their own codex(compression algorithms)but uses Lucent's. Nokia gateways have the ability to compression any voice calls upto 8:1. As with Crys-Tel, they have the option to either compress a call or just do without any compression just like Qwest. By the way, Qwest communications and TeleMatrix both uses Nokia platform for their IP network - the two largest ITSP in the "World".
As with billing, as long as it travels through our network we can bill for it. The are numerous billing platforms available today which can track all IP traffic over our network. For example, Mind CTI a leader in IP billing platforms.
There are companies such as IDT Corp (Nasd:IDTC) which has a program calls Net2phone which is a PC-to-phone software which they are handling million of minutes and are billing for it. By the way, pc-to-phone always uses the "Internet".
Does this help ???????????????????
Warm Regards,
