QCOM has by far the broadest patent portfolio on CDMA (code division multiple access) technology. The deal with Erickson is the final nail in the coffin for Qualcom' fight with Erickson over patent supremacy and TDMA as the mainstream wireless technology. Now it is just a matter of time before CDMA takes over the mainstream wireless market. "on a tear that could last for years" - you are right about that. I don't know whether stock valuations will continue to move up as much as they have in the past but Qualcom's sales should continue to improve at a brisk pace. When Asian and S. American economies improve, Qualcom will benefit even further. The reason this story is so compelling boils down to dollars and cents - it is by far cheaper to install wireless networks than it is to install new wired lines. That is why China, Chile and points in between have chosen Qualcom's technology and will invest heavily rolling it out to their populations. That is also why you can now get wireless service for as low as 5c/minute (still with some limitations).
