I live in a small town just to the south of Houston. Within the past few years, Houston schools have required all HISD students to wear uniforms. The gang activity has dropped significantly they say because everyone has to dress the same. Some parents strongly objected to this during a school board meeting saying that having children wearing uniforms would cut off their identities and individualism. In my town, we have one high school. We've considered this policy on several occasions but as yet have failed to adopt the plan. Other school districts around the Houston area are starting to file suit as the big city slowly encroaches and annexes their unincorporated areas.

As an independent town, we in Pearland don't have to worry about that, but we are growing daily as families are "escaping" to small town life. I've been in favor of the uniform plan. I don't think it's the end all answer but it's sure a place to start.
