It's still unfathomable to me that this has occured again. My eldest will be 22 this Sunday. I also have an 8 and 6 year old. My husband and I moved to a small town just outside of Houston to raise a family 24 years ago. We only have one high school but when the new one was built to replace the 50 year old one some 5 years ago, it was built like a fort. Cameras, metal detectors, etc. We even have 4 city police officers who patrol the halls and grounds daily. They have found two guns in back packs and various other "weapons" in the past 5 years since the new school opened. We even have drug sniffing dogs that come in randomly.

You should have heard the cries of "wasting our tax dollars" and "overkill" at one school board meeting a few years back. I understand from one of the school board members (he's our insurance agent) that they've been flooded with calls from frightened parents thankful that we have such a system inplace.
