Pentium class processors are a maturing technology which will soon be replaced by Intel's next generation of .25 micron technology with speeds well into the 400 Mhz range. AMD has announced that the new K6 will be developed using .35 microns and that motherboards will require only minor changes to work with the K6 provided socket compatibility is maintained. What they apparently do not want to let out of the bag is that they have failed to achieve anything near the 200 Mhz of a vanilla Pentiums. Given that will soon be the low end processor for home PCs and notebooks, how does AMD hope to compete with 233 Mhz and 266 Mhz Pentiums with MMX?

Intel will deliver 400 Mhz at .25 microns and stuff 200 Mhz CPUs into lap-top, palm-top, set-top and Network Computers. AGP isn't going to be an option with the new media intensive Internet services anymore than 56K modems will be. Intel will probably drop the price of its 200 Mhz and lower systems to unheard of levels. Corporations will still be buying high-end, high margin servers with Intel processors and using low-cost 200 Mhz Pentiums for the desktop.
