Good point-The telcos have the network infrastructure and the money, but not the bandwidth, and the cable guys have the bandwidth and agressive management, but lousy infrastructure and by comparison, not much money. This is going to be a fascinating horse race to watch, but at present, the horses are still training on the farm. You may be right about big numbers for ADSL before cable modems, but so far I think the cable guys have the lead in numbers and extensiveness of trials, and Optus is scheduled to begin offering broadband service over cable to the SOHO market in Australia next month using cable modems from ADC. Since ADSL is also being evaluated there, this may provide an interesting test market.
Two comments on your earlier post (May 5 or so). First, the Best of Show at InterOp was won by Ipsilon, a privately-held IP/ATM switching company. Second, I doubt that US West has selected their equipment for ADSL deployment-they are just getting started with the trials, and by the time they make their deployment decision, a lot of the trial equipment will be obsolete.
