China's PC Sales to Boom in 1999

This is not bad.

(BEIJING) -- Sales of personal computers will reach 5.1 million in China in 1999, up 25 percent from 1998, according to the Information Products Administration Department of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII).

Zhang Qi, director of the Department said that Chinese computer manufacturers will face tougher competition this year, as many large Chinese enterprises involved in the manufacture and retailing of electrical appliances have also elbowed into the PC market.

"This will increase both China's production capacity and market supply of computers, and computer manufacturers need to improve their technology and after-sales services in order to consolidate their market position," Zhang noted.

She added that it would become a new trend for manufacturers of computers to operate in accordance with the specific needs of customers rather than at their own whims. China's software and information services industries will maintain a strong momentum of development in the coming years.

The advancement of the sector will also help push forward the development of China's PC market, as costs of telecommunications services have been cut and Internet services are growing rapidly in China.

China manufactured 4.4 million PCs in 1998, and domestically-made computers accounted for 72 percent of the total.
