i don't understand why they'd want to burden the main cpu with modem functions when they could've gotten a 286-class chip just to handle that stuff for a few pennies. we already know windows is not the best multitasker -- now add modem functions to that?! i'd hate to be the person whose cad job is slowed down because of v42bis-type comp/decom algorithms running on the cpu. many years ago, i had a usr courier modem, and it had an intel 80186 cpu (five trivia points to anyone who can tell me the name of the computer that ran on a 80186) just for the modem. seems as though we're taking a step backwards by putting that stuff on the main cpu.
