Jimbo, Pinnacor is building the White Boxes for intel.https://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=9072599
Kurt Bleicken, president and CEO of GreenPages, a Kittery, Maine-based reseller, says he has seen strong interest in white-box desktops, but not as much in white-box servers. He says most customers are telling him they will stick with Compaq Computer or Hewlett-Packard. Adds Robin Reid, GreenPages' director of operations: "They tend to go for a name server."
But times are changing, and they're changing fast. The GreenPages execs expect to do more business in white-box servers in the coming months, and both Pinacor and Intel plan to ride that shift. That could be bad news for traditional PC server makers, which must try to maintain their growth in a flat market (see chart, at left).
Pinacor and Intel quietly cemented their deal last June, as companies like IBM and Compaq were ironing out their direct-server sales initiatives to compete with Dell Computer. The goal of Pinacor and Intel was to create boxes with brand-name components inside, but no brand name on the outside.
