<Does anyone know whether very cheap machines are generally available outside the US? I would expect it to take a while but when it happens....>

Here in Australia computers are still expensive. I looked at the Dell WebSite, compared to price I pay for my laptop and found the price was nearly double. Yesterday, I visited a friend's shop where they sell Apple Computer's. The new IMac is $2500(AUS), again near double the U.S. price.

Of course, I'm used to checking the prices in California. Perhaps if I walked into a local store in Idaho I might find the prices much higher also.

Some of the difference here is caused by import tariffs, but mostly I feel the differences due to inefficient distribution. If these people start buying computers on the web, prices will certainly fall. This country is a perfect example of how the Internet can bring efficiencies to the market. Funny thing is they miss a Federal Express or other kind of distribution service.

In regards to your quote from the Gartner group, I thought was interesting that in 1998 they quote the number of "PCs", and in 2002 they simply say "machines". I think there must be great confusion when anybody tries to forecast exactly what kind of machines we're talking about people buying in the next three to five years.

Regards, Mark
