Belgrade Okays
International
Presence-Russia
04:31 p.m Apr 22, 1999 Eastern

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian
envoy said after talks with
Yugoslav President Slobodan
Milosevic Thursday that Belgrade
was ready to accept an
''international presence'' in
Kosovo under U.N. auspices,
Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Tass said Viktor Chernomyrdin,
speaking to reporters in Belgrade,
had referred to ''international
forces'' but did not make clear
whether this meant Belgrade would
allow foreign troops into Kosovo.
Milosevic has previously opposed
allowing foreign troops onto its soil
in the conflict with NATO.

Tass said Chernomyrdin and
Milosevic had drawn up a joint
document after more than eight
hours of talks. The agency did not
say what conditions, if any, NATO
was expected to meet for it to take
effect.

'''An international presence in
Kosovo under the United Nations
auspices and with Russia's
participation' is provided for in a
joint document adopted on the
results of the meeting between
Viktor Chernomyrdin and
Slobodan Milosevic,'' Tass said.

''What kind of international forces
they will be or from which
countries -- this is yet to be
discussed. But the main thing is
that Russia take part,'' Tass quoted
Chernomyrdin, a former prime
minister, as saying.

Chernomyrdin, who later left
Belgrade for Moscow, was quoted
as saying he wanted to meet
representatives of NATO member
states and could do so in Moscow
as early as Friday. He also said he
would fly without delay to Europe
to meet NATO leaders if
necessary.
