Here's the answer. It comes from the white paper on the page I pointed to: "Microsoft® SQL Server and the Sybase database were developed together until their respective 4.2 versions. This similarity provides for a unique, low-cost opportunity for Sybase customers to migrate to Microsoft SQL Server and benefit from the new functionality of Microsoft SQL Server version 7.0."
