Good post, SteveJerseyShore.
I'm about the same age, and relate to the descriptions.

Dennis Prager has some interesting things to say
about the development of children
in the absence of parenting, control, and normal discipline:
that this practice or trend of being the child's friend,
and protecting their (precious) self-esteem
at all costs is very dangerous. (I don't tag this
as liberal or whatever - just misguided).

This line of reasoning (much better explained
by the man himself, or in his books,
e.g. "Think A Second Time")
explains that built-up self-esteem without discipline,
values, limits can create a real monster,
that the result can be to the extreme negative
rather than the intended self-confident mentality.
