MyPublish Implications... Re-Defining Deployment.
After getting an advance peek at MyPublish thanks to an RB poster last night, I've had a chance to think about it.
Viewed one way, this is DEPLOYMENT of a sort: The Virtual Wave Meter embedded in portal communities (following the maxim: go where the traffic is). I knew when I saw the tagline, "Bringing Commerce To Community," that this was going to be an importable object for the likes of Infoseek, Yahoo!, AOL, etc. DEPLOYMENT, even virtually, is good in my books.
What we are talking about is a concept that, as you all know, Metcalfe calls the "pay-as-you-go Web." It isn't something that folks are particularly accustomed to... yet. But, this "deployment" can only help popularize this concept. (I wonder how or if content is screened... to avoid potential litigation pitfalls. But, that's just a stray thought.)
I still think, going back to an old thought, that it would be cool and would really summon the tornado if we could get some celebrity types--authors or musicians or even videographers--to use the virtual WaveMeter as a direct channel.
I've also been thinking about the potential of the real EMBASSY chip to be used, now bear with me, as a way to create what would be, in essence, gated enclaves on the Web. Could it be possible, at some future point, that there could be designer versions of this chip that could be used in computers for all Amway distributors or members of AARP? This isn't, I think, feasible. The numbers wouldn't add up to justify customization. But, it is an interesting thought exercise.
What I obviously hope doesn't happen to the Web is what has happened (at least until fairly recently) to the vast majority of our public spaces and whole chunks of our public life. (For reference, read Richard Sennett's The Fall of Public Man.) The creation--by a crazy mix of dereliction and design--of jungles... and blasted places. Necessitating little upscale "Weborhoods" that are sealed tight at night.
Thinking expansively... on a day... that portends much...
