OK thanks, Robert.
It's worth knowing that in US jurisprudence there is a concept called a "higher standard of care". This bears on the gun carry issue as follows. Someone who carries a gun in a licensed manner deliberately chooses whether to carry that day. So an armed person is more easily held culpable for imprudent acts than somebody else. The very essence of concealed carry is to keep the weapon out of the eyes and minds of surrounding people. Showing and/or telling is not only startlingly impolite, but it is grounds for the revocation of the carry license. That is because just showing a gun (if you are not a lawman) is an act of assault. It takes a certain maturity and equanimity of character to carry a gun properly.
I'll tell you this. I am pretty peeved at the state of CA because almost all localities here peremptorily deny applications for concealed carry. This is wrong imho. But the flipside is that I would probably not want to carry a gun, even legally. It's a pain doing a good job of making a medium-sized handgun disappear on my rangy frame, and the responsibility that would fall upon me if I was near a bad situation is something I'd rather not have.
Where I do not for a moment hesitate is to have a self-defense gun in the home. The idea of someone in my house uninvited flatly terrifies me. Without a gun - I would have no credible defense against even the most casual of criminal enterers. The phone doesn't count - police response times are centuries long compared to the time it takes someone to inflict lethal blood loss on me, then **** and strangle the ladies of the house. Until the local constabulary can GUARANTEE an effective response to an armed incursion - with huge cash indemnities in the event of incomplete customer satisfaction - I am very jealous of the right to defend my home with baldly lethal force.

And I pray to any God who will listen that I am never ever put to that test.
