The real valuable commodity here may simply be attention.

One thing that we, and by that I mean we as parents in our neighborhood, keep a watch out for one and others kids. When my oldest was growing up I quit working so he wouldn't become a latch key kid. Money was tight but we seemed to get along without the frequent trips to the fast food places. I also had a few of the neighbors kids come home with my son until their parents arrived from work. They'd all sit down, have a snack and get their homework done. After that, if time and daylight permitted, they could go outside to play. We would rotate between houses so that no one person had the kids everyday. I think this helped alot because they knew someone would be there waiting for them. Lets face it, daycare is expensive and alot of parents opt to let their kids go home to an empty house.

Not only do the parents need to pull together but so do the communities. In the 20+ years that we lived in that neighborhood, (we moved just down the road a bit 2 years ago) we only lost one kid to "the other side". I'm happy to say that he was able to turn his life around (he joined the Marines).

Kids need guidence. If a parent can't be there, then we as the neighbors of these kids should make an effort to help out. They need to know that someone cares.
