Robert - I don't believe there will be self aware machines for a very long time, if ever, depending on your definition of self aware.

Maybe, maybe not, but my whole point is that it doesn't matter. It is the complexity and the inability to understand what we are building that is the concern. At some point, whether conscious or not, machines will be smarter than us in many ways in which they are currently not and hence will be very difficult to understand and control. For a good book on how to program without having a clue what you are making or how it works see:
