Boston & Ski ... I agree this "legitimizes" the business that Exodus and Above are in. Many new investors will read this news of Intels intentions and automatically ask, who else is in this business already. Many people will buy EXDS & ABOV and wait for Intel to join the party later, then move the money to the 1 or 2 market leaders.
Don't forget, there is an awareness in the industry that doing business with Intel and MS is not easy, they are the industry gorillas that like to "call the shots" and Intel is not used to being a "service provider" to anyone else !
If I were DCLK I rather be the big customer doing business with EXDS instead of dealing with Intel under their terms.
There is a big cultural difference between Intels core business then switching over to the role as a "service provider" ... they will exhibit the same M.O. and turn off prospects, unless they hire an outside exec and run it as a separate autonomous business. Then again, they could just buy EXDS couldn't they ?
