It took Pearl Harbor before Roosevelt was able to mobilize popular opinion to bring the US into the war against Hitler. It was known "privately" for at least 3 years that Jews, Poles, gypsies and other "dispensables" were being exterminated. If Roosevelt had committed troops to Europe and against Hitler in the 30's, there was a serious risk he would have been thrown out of office. Popular press was heavily against involvement and into isolationism.

Tell the crosses at Normandy that the price was too high for an earlier entry, when we could still have landed troops in Europe at airports, instead of being cut to ribbons on the beach.

If we have to look at the cost/benefit analysis of this, the cost is now 1000 fold what it would have been to stop Milosevic last year. Next year it will be another 1000 fold.
