I think you did the right thing too. When they first starting discussing the Roth IRA, I thought it was a great thing for the young (and it is). I am 53 and decided to run some numbers on my own situation. My calculations show it is good for anyone with a nine year horizon, although the longer, the better. We had a client do a conversion on his death bed last February, thus creating an income tax liability that reduced his taxable estate. In effect the government subsidized 55% of the tax.

The Roth's are a great tool for young people. Made all my children either convert if they have an IRA or start a Roth with current year contributions.

P.S. I am even "aiming" my wife's Roth. Gave mine to a money manager.
