There's always INKT. Inktomi is a software/technology company that would fit very well in Microsoft's corporate culture were it not for all those Unix machines they use. But even that isn't a huge hurdle, since Microsoft has learned with Hotmail that it's OK to let a division run its services on another platform.

I'm not saying that it will happen, but only that it's the kind of company that Microsoft might be looking at. I'm sure there are other startup companies out there working on the same kind of network cache server and search software that Inktomi creates.

On a smaller level, Google has great software that could enhance the msn portal. They might even consider talking Compaq out of doing an IPO for AltaVista to sell it.
