Realistically, the smartcards will probably going to make their way into the US market as something other than credit-card replacements.

First, they are mostly useful as "debit" cards, which is how they are used in Europe. The idea of a "credit" card with a revolving credit arrangement as we have here is mostly non-existant over there, and always has been. You "charge up" the card with cyberdollars from your bank account, then spend them. Recharge as necessary...

These cards can be very useful for secure storage of a lot of different kinds or records and other information which you MIGHT want to keep with you. Another possibility is a single card which contains ALL your credit card and bank card numbers. Put it into the reader, select the account you want to use, and save yourself the trouble of carrying 10 different cards...
