Paul,
Harry - <<Re: " Is Intel going to get into the server business or will they bid out that part of the project to one supplier, as they do semi-equipment for example?">>
<My guess is that they do it in-house.
They make the CPU and SHV motherboards.
They have a division that used to make PCs and workstations for customers that requested it.
Thus, I assume rolling their own COOKIE CUTTER COPY EXACTLY servers will be a slam dunk - low cost, low overhead.>
Vedddyyy indedesting. My impression, which may be, no probably is wrong, is that Intel would provide turnkey systems for these internet farms. So, the servers are only a part of the overall system. Besides, we have switches, routers, hubs, ethernet or whatever backbones, fiber/copper cable infrastructures, Sys Admins...So, it's a big system integration job and then ongoing requirements to manage upgrades in hardware, software, network stuff, etc., 24X7 equipment maintenance and repair.
And yes, does it run NT or Unix?
Chip company came a long way.
