Ann,

You wrote (concerning "advanced" features on CPU chips): The other thing that I think about when we get all these bells and whistles on the chips is weather or not the average user is really going to use them. I know Paul Engle and I had a nice conversation when MMX first came out. Yes, he is a nice guy, if your nice to him. There was very little software that actually took advantage of the new features.

If a customer is running Microsoft Windows 98 and using any software that makes use of DirectX (some games, some graphics apps) then they will be making use of MMX and other advanced features even if the programmers of the apps did not explicitly use these features. This is because Microsoft recognizes the various chips and uses the most advantageous features of each one.

The AMD feature set is quite impressive, as is the Intel feature set. Going beyond MMX, the companies have diverged. Of the known CPU providers, IDT is following along in AMD's path and it is rumored that NSM will also follow AMD. AMD has been very active in getting the ISVs to write to their feature set and as I mentioned above, DirectX 6 and higher recognize the existence of these features and make use of them. Of course the newest Intel features are also recognized and used in sufficiently new versions of DirectX.

However, you are right and it is not clear that AMD will ever be able to shake the perception that their chips are somehow second-rate. That's unfortunate because they do have good products.
