i think i'll pass on going into the registry. especially for something as inconsequential as icons. if i'm going to go in there and scramble eggs, i want it to be for a more compelling reason. <gg> but then again, having said that, maybe i'll just go look around a bit.

i also have the .gif or .bmp files as desktop icons question out on another message board, and i'll probably put it out to a couple more before i'm done. if i learn more, i'll be glad to share. essentially, the piece i was reading was advocating the "easy way" (as you referred to it). easy, perhaps, but successful, not.
