This deal will be interesting for BCI/NTL. In fact, BCI is already building a cable network (all fiber) in and around Sao Paulo. They currently offer cable service there and I believe they also had plans to lease network space to some of the local phone companies. It may be possible for them to use some or all of their existing network to offer phone access as well. A new fiber network like the one they have in place is a valuable asset in a country like Brazil, but it could also mean that there won't as much in the way new equipment purchases from NTL. Still, US$ 1 billion does mean a lot capital spending. Not sure how much of the network BCI has already built. This could be a huge thing for them though. They could sell cable and telephone over the same lines. I understand their cable service has taken off so far. People in Sao Paulo are used to really poor service from the previous carriers, both cable and phone. I'm in Venezuela and it's much the same here. The wait for a new hookup is sometimes more than a year, even for businesses. If you really want one sooner though, you can always bribe one of the contractors (sometimes $1000). Companies like BCI should be able come in and kick @#$ given the environment. That should continue to mean a lot of network business for companies like NTL in coming years.

By the way, I expect BCI to bid for a licence in Venezuela too when the monopoly ends in a few months. They would have 4-6 million potential customers in Caracas alone. Maybe some more network business for NTL????
