RE: What is microfluidics and why will it revolutionize biotech>

OK, let me give it a try. Microfluidics is the manipulation of extremely small volumes. (ie nanoliters) Current molecular bio techniques use measurements of minimally 1 microliter or so (1000 times larger than a nanoliter.) This is done manually by people withg pippettes.

Microfluidics is generally done by etching micro canals into glass surfaces with micropumps that move the liquid around. The advantages of this approach are 1) Much smaller sample sizes needed. This saves money and precious tissue samples. 2) No humans are needed. This dramatically increases accuracy and decreases time spent and thus costs of using these systems. Additionally, the less labor involved the more likely a doctor is to use a chip in a clinical setting.

Now my question: Does anyone know how much SAffx is doing with microfluidics?
