Robert, According to George Gilder, who first introduced me to UNPH, its customers include such giants as Lucent, Nortel, Corning, Ciena, and Alcatel. The drive toward optic networks is constantly helped along by the upheaval and current mayhem in these guys' markets. Competition among regional bells, long distance carriers, internet service providers, competitive local exchange carriers, and undersea consortia ... all is forcing firms in this arena to seek out the cutting edge.
These customers dont have the time, ability, or capital to cobble together integrated subsystems to work with the key components sold now by Uniphase. They want prefab modules that work. UNPH merger with JDSFitel facilitates the one-stop shopping. UNPH modulators and lasers, JDS isolators and muxers. These guys here got the lead in amplifiers (no conversion to electronics). Current work is on transponders, add/drop muxers, and switching. I paraphrase Gilder in a recent report.
We are not just talking about the big telcos here. The entire fiber optic infrastructure is UNPH's oyster.
I havent heard of any tight link to the cable side of the world. Keep hearing about challenges for the "last mile" linking fiber optic to businesses and homes. High frequency microwave is a likely candidate for this.
anyone else aware of relationship between fiber and cable?
