When e*trade comes up after a big down there are always loose ends. The problem you had would likely not have happened with a Limit order which I'd have thought safer even on the NYSE. I day-trade quite a lot, and I have come to accept a certain amount of quirkiness from e*trade - you might say it adds to the adrenalin rush. a problem is that they introduce new features and upgrades quite often without properly checking them out. effectively e*trade is a perpetual beta site.
