FWIW, Sun exceeded its own expectation with the new workstation line. If the SunPCI card is viable for dual-platform developers, it's reasonable to expect that Sun will at least hold its share in the professional market. You raised the Linux issue and focused only on the server side. If Dell and others start selling Linux to the masses, Windows is at risk as much as if not more than other Unix platforms. MSFT will survive with $29.99 Win98, but it will not be able to use this cash cow and the high market cap to expand its business bases. If the Linux base expands, this CD will sell for $4.99. Will that make Win98 a $9.99 CD?

Now, if Linux vendors can come up with a liability model on the server side, I suspect that it will be able to eat into other Unix servers in the same fashion.
