Rtev, How about AOL's approach. Their portal is doing well due to their ISP. When you log on, that the best time to get a subscriber to view your portal site. You would actually get more eyeballs and for longer period of time than for example going to the Yahoo web site.
New users would prefer the first screen upon sign on at least while they are learning. That is when the ISP can trap the user. That is the only reason that AOL is so successfull. Their portals would certainly have been ignored if it was not for their ISP having such a large market share, IMHO. For example, i would have just gone to Yahoo or MSN. It may also be a quality of "hits" issue when for example someone signs on, they get more familiar with their "home" site.

I agree that MSFT would not want to be in the ISP biz but if it means that is what they must do ensure more exposure for their MSN portal, they will do it. That is probably why we don't get clear indications from MSFT whether they want to remain in the ISP business. They have evaluate how much is lost from not having MSN appear upon sign on in term of quantity and quality of hits.
I realize that users are probably(not sure) able to set the default site upon signing on the net but most would not know how to do this (including myself). I personally hate seeing the useless AT&T page.
