CD-ROM drives are going to be obsolete in the next 1-2 years, let alone 5-6 years. DVDs play all CD-ROMs, so I would heavily recommend getting one in your next machine.

CDs are just getting too small for current software distributions.

One caveat is that DVDs plan to undergo further enhancements. Currently, they only support 4.7GB, but eventually will support over 17GB. Also, DVD-RAM may begin to become more common, as it is writable as well.

All of these enhancements will require new drives, though. So your mileage may vary.
