David, I visited Shengzhen, China in December , 1996 and I talked to the local VCD manufacturers and a few
items is not verifiable on this site.

ESSt has an internal RISC that serves as the VCD 1.1 and VCD 2.0 controller. The MPEG audio/video
decoding function was done by an internal 64 bit vector processor. There are a lot of RISC and vector
processor MIPS left unused on this very small die sized IC. ESST design team cramed extra features in the
form of firmware. Painful and tedious but at no extra cost of silicon. The silicon is the result of many years of
custom layout. Thus ESST is competing on features, really not on cost. You interviewed with Jan at IIT, you
know how good his chip was and it is better now and the variable bit rate adaptation is handled by software.
Mark

Does anyone know what features ESST is able to add with their firmware?
