FWIW, DSL seems to be growing. I recently was informed by one of my ISP's that they were providing DSL (where available) through either Bell Atlantic or Covad. There seems to be a big spread in costs:

Bell Atlantic

Set-up cost, inc. modem...$250
Phone line and internet service
640k downstream/90k upstream...57.95/mo.
1.5m/90..104.90/mo

Covad

Set-up with modem...$575
Phone line and internet
384/128...59.95/mo.
768/384...79.95/mo.

It seems like a no-brainer to me, but is there any reason I should consider Covad's service if all I'm looking for is faster charts and quotes?

Naturally, it's not available in my area, but the sales rep I spoke with expected my local office to be DSL-equipped within the next two months. He also said they are swamped with requests for the service,
and that they are rolling it out as quickly as they can (I take that with a grain of salt)
