Very interesting article on HGSI in the April, 1966, issue 0f Individual Investor by D.Geracioti. Even at that time the CEO of HGSI, Dr. Haseltine, stated "We've isolated most of the functions of the human genes, and know the functions for about half of them." Also quoted is Bear Stern's analyst David Molowa: "virtually all commercially relevant sections of the human genome" have been sequenced. I would surmise that virtually all human genes worth patenting have been patented by now.

I can't imagine a serious slowdown in the U.S. patent process as it would have too big an impact for all of US science and industry to happen.
