Ambulance Attendant

I guess it was the eyes
I remember most, of
That frantic father
With arms out stretched.

Or perhaps it was the salt
Taste of his tears as
I pressed my lips to the
Tiny cold mouth, breathing

Into that little blue angel.

John reeled us blindly through
Light rain and heavy traffic
While my hands moved mechanically, and
My surging fluid heart beseeched God,

"DON'T"

My tears flowed later, fading into
The background of that room, all Chromium and super-white.
A sad shake of the head and...

"That's that."

After, we rode in silence
Until John dared with,

"Chinese?"

I nodded, still staring out
The window, with that silly
Little shoe in my hand, while
My faith struggled
To catch its breath.
