A dozen other companies have built auction technology just like BIDS but BIDS has a US patent on a specific technology - The declining auction or also known as in some circles as the "Dutch Auction". Nobody else has the right to use this process electronically. That would include not just the Web, but TV, Cable and Satellite. There are certain products and services that decline in value as time goes on. For example, vacation packages, travel, hotel rooms, flowers (as the dutch use this form of auction in Holland, hence the name). BIDS also has strength in liquidations (they were formerly known as Internet Liquidators) and this is going to be the main focus of their business to business side of things.

That's the difference and it's a HUGE difference. If there wasn't this difference then there wouldn't be such excitement about the company. Remember, Bid.Com may licence its patent to other auction houses, they have no right to use it otherwise.
